Use this procedure to replace the entire failed Dual Flash drive carrier in your HPE storage array or expansion shelf.

Time required:

5 to 10 minutes

Parts required:

Replacement drive carrier ordered from HPE

Information required:

  • RMA (Return Material Authorization) work order
  • Case number
  • Array serial number

Tools required:

  • ESD (electrostatic discharge) strap or appropriate grounding device

Support contact:

See Support.

HPE recommends using the Maintenance Window functionality within the HPE InfoSight portal to inform HPE Support of upcoming maintenance windows.

Refer to https://infosight.hpe.com/dashboards/nimble/wellness/maintenance-windows for more information.

You can disable automated support case generation during planned maintenance from the Manage Maintenance Windows page. After a maintenance window is set, no further communication with HPE Support is required.

Caution:

Before you attempt to replace the failed drive carrier:

  • Do not remove the drive carrier or individual SSD slots from the drive carrier until you are ready to install the replacement.
  • Determine that the drive carrier has failed before making the replacement.

To identify a failed drive carrier:

    • LED on the carrier itself is solid red
    • Event appears in the Events list
    • Receipt of an alert email from the array
  • Verify that the replacement drive carrier matches the part shown on the RMA work order.
  • Use the same type and size replacement drive carrier as the old drive carrier (SSD dual flash carrier).

The A and B drive sled label may vary in appearance or be upside down when the new drive carrier is properly oriented.

  1. Gently pull the front bezel away from the array chassis.

The bezel includes power connection pins on both sides.

  2. Identify the failed drive carrier.

A failed drive carrier has a red fault LED on the right side of the carrier, to the right of the drive LEDs. Do not replace a drive carrier with a dark carrier fault LED.

    1. Drive B operation
    2. Drive A operation
    3. Drive carrier fault
  3. Release and remove both drive sleds (B and A) from the failed drive carrier.
    1. To release the handle, slide the small tab to the right on the sled of the drive (A, bottom). The sled handle springs open.
    2. Pull the sled handle to remove the drive from the drive carrier. (Use firm, steady pressure.)
    3. Repeat steps a and b to remove the second drive from the drive carrier (B, top).
  4. Remove the drive carrier.
    1. Remove the black retention clip that is next to the release latch by firmly grasping it and pulling straight out. Note the location and orientation of the clip.
    2. Release and remove the drive carrier from the chassis bay. Use firm, steady pressure.
  5. Prepare and insert the replacement drive carrier.
    1. In the replacement drive carrier, remove the black retention clip that is next to the release latch, and then remove and discard the two empty SSD drive sleds.
    2. With the carrier handle open, carefully slide the new drive carrier into the empty chassis bay and close the carrier handle to lock the carrier in place.
  6. Insert the SSD drives (A and B), one at a time, into the replacement drive carrier.
    1. With the sled handle open, carefully slide the first SSD drive sled (A, bottom) into the bottom drive bay (A) of the new drive carrier, and close the sled handle.

Push the handle until it fully engages with the release tab.

    2. Repeat step a) for the second SSD drive sled (B, top) to insert it into the top drive bay (B).
  7. Secure the bezel to the front of the chassis.

Hold the bezel in place and then firmly press the bezel until you feel the keepers lock.

  8. Return the failed drive carrier as directed on the RMA work order.
