Install an Expansion Shelf

Caution:

When you activate the expansion shelf, there is a momentary pause in data services from the array. You might need to activate the expansion shelf during a maintenance window.

Caution:

The chassis weighs over 41 kg (90 lb). Always use at least two people or a server lift when lifting the chassis.

The chassis weighs over 32 kg (70 lb). Always use at least two people or a server lift when lifting the chassis.

What you need for each expansion shelf:

  • 19-inch four-post square-hole rack. If your rack has round holes, use the provided square-hole adapters
  • Four rack units (4U) of space available in the 19-inch rack
  • Phillips screwdriver (included)
  • At least two SAS cables, 1 m or 3 m (two 1 m cables are included) rack
Caution:
Start-up current draw may exceed 6A. When attaching multiple shelves, attach and activate the shelves one at a time.
  • Before beginning, download and read the Release Notes, available on HPE InfoSight (https://infosight.hpe.com). If you do not have an HPE InfoSight account, click Create Account and provide the required information.

  • The power supplies are 220V AC or 110V AC auto-detecting.
  • This product is intended for installation in restricted-access locations only, such as a dedicated equipment room or an electrical closet.

Use this procedure to install an ES2-AFS2 expansion shelf, or up to six ES2-H expansion shelves and one ES2-AFS2 expansion shelf (for Adaptive Flash arrays), or up to two SF-ES2 expansion shelves (for Secondary Flash arrays).

  1. Unpack and inspect the hardware.

    Save the original packaging.

  2. Separate the inner rails from the rail assemblies.
    1. Press the catch at the front end of the middle rail.
    2. Slide the inner rail out of the rail assembly.
    3. Repeat steps a and b with the other rail.
      1. Press catch here
      2. Slide rails apart
  3. Install the inner rails onto the chassis.
    1. Align the holes on the inner rails with the hooks on the sides of the chassis.
    2. Slide the rails toward the front of the chassis to seat the hooks.
    3. Install the two smaller set screws to secure the inner rails in position.

  4. Install the outer rail assemblies onto the rack.
NOTE: The middle rails attach to the front posts. The outer rails attach to the back posts.
    1. Align the upper hook of the rail at the position you want.
    2. Press the rail into the post and slide it down to lock it in position.

    1. Insert the chassis into the rack, back side first. Be sure the inner rails insert into the outer rails.
    2. Gently slide the chassis into position.
When you hear a click, the inner rails have locked into the rail assembly.

  6. Secure the chassis to the rack.

The chassis has two handles. Each handle has a thumbscrew that holds the chassis to the rails so it does not slide out of the rack. Tighten the thumbscrew in each handle until secure.
